Background: The emergence of British guitar music during the second half of the twentieth century is due almost entirely to the great guitarist Julian Bream. It was he who commissioned music from a number of composers with international reputations, thus creating a whole new repertoire of guitar music, which had until then belonged to the sound world of Spain and Latin America. This recording features William Walton's popular Five Bagatelles, his only work for guitar, three characteristically refined works by Lennox Berkeley, and Peter Maxwell Davies' haunting lament Farewell to Stromness. |
