Background: Naxos presents a brand new recording of Shostakovich's suite from the ballet The Bolt, coupled with the enormously popular Jazz Suites and Tahiti Trot. These spirited performances conducted by Dmitri Yablonsky will ensure the disc's place on the shelf of every enthusiast. The Bolt was first produced in 1931 in Leningrad. A depiction of industrial espionage, it closed after only a few performances and was not to be revived during Shostakovich's lifetime. However he drafted a suite, changing some of the movement titles to divert the attention away from the ballet's subject matter. The two Jazz Suites, dating from 1934 and 1938 respectively, were Shostakovich's venture into lifting jazz from its status as disposable café music to something greater. The short piece Tahiti Trot, meanwhile, was famously the result of a bet with the conductor Nikolai Malko, who challenged Shostakovich to orchestrate the hit tune Tea for Two within one hour. Forty minutes later, Shostakovich produced one of his greatest hits! |
