Background: In perfecting the newly developing form of the Italian solo concerto, Vivaldi wrote nearly five hundred concertos. Many of these were for the violin, but there were others for a variety of solo instruments or for groups of instruments, including the 37 completed concertos for the bassoon, an unusually high number. Judging by the great variety and remarkable inventiveness on display in these works, Vivaldi clearly enjoyed exploring the full possibilities of this instrument. This second disc in the series (Volume 1 is available on Naxos 8555937) features one of Vivaldi's best known concertos, 'La Notte' with its vivid evocation of ghosts, sleep and dawn. |
