Background: Rodrigo's concerto for two guitars and orchestra, the Concierto Madrigal, is a suite of movements bound by themes from the Renaissance madrigal, 'O felici occhi miei'. He took as inspiration the poetic atmosphere of each episode, some of which are more archaic in character, others more closely related to folk-music. Rodrigo’s Concierto para una fiesta is classical in form, its themes described by the composer as 'very Valencian'. The slow movement is not unlike that of the Concierto de Aranjuez, and despite being his last concerto, the composer's affinity to the guitar remains very much in evidence. |
