Background: Latin-American dance music, which has recently enjoyed a significant revival, began with the Argentinian tango in the late 19th century; and by the 1920s other Hispano- African hybrids - imported principally from Brazil, Cuba and Mexico - had entered Western popular music vocabulary.

Throughout Europe and the USA, first recording and radio companies, and then the film industry, were keen to exploit rumbas, sambas, mambos and other rhythms via the mechanisms of Tin Pan Alley. This programme presents a cross-section of some infectiously enduring examples, including La Cucaracha (literally 'cockroach beetle'), Mexican Hat Dance and La Bamba.
