Background: Telemann was among the most distinguished composers of his time, and a rival to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach in reputation. His output was vast, and his musical style developed with the times, from the characteristically late Baroque to the new stile galant exemplified by his godson, CPE Bach. Telemann's suite based on Cervantes' comic story of the adventures of Don Quixote illustrates the hero's follies in a series of light-hearted programmatic movements, and the suite La Lyra is notable for an unusual imitation of the hurdy-gurdy (or beggars' lyre). |
