Background: Like his rivals, the members of the Strauss family, Ziehrer wrote in all the major dance forms of the period. In addition, his military role obliged him to compose much ceremonial music, and he is considered to have been Austria’s finest composer of marches.

Ziehrer’s achievements have been overshadowed by the renown of his great rivals, the Strauss brothers.
