Background: Dallas-born multi-reedist David Newman began his musical career in the early 1950s with R&B musicians like T-Bone Walker and Lowell Fulson, before making his name working as a sideman for Ray Charles between 1954 and 1964. He recorded a number of albums for Atlantic throughout the ‘60s and early ‘70s, and during that time, he also backed King Curtis, Eddie Harris and Herbie Mann, who were also signed to the label. His warm saxophone tenor sound later graced the albums of Aretha Franklin, Dr John and many others. |
