Background: Sparked by such imported French successes as Offenbach’s Orphée and nourished by Viennese dance traditions, operetta sprang to life in Vienna in the mid-1870s with Die Fledermaus and other key works by ‘Waltz King’ Johann Strauss II. The new genre flourished with Suppé, Millöcker, Zeiler and Ziehrer, and evolved via Lehár (whose 1905 masterpiece Die lustige Witwe is still rated the finest Viennese musical comedy) and Kálman until the 1930s when, with the advent of the film-musical, it reached an even wider audience. |
