Background: The German composer Hans Pfitzner was an important figure in his own generation and a romantic in the tradition of Schumann and Brahms. Like all his operas, Das Christelflein is a dramatization of Schopenhauer's pessimistic philosophy, but is set to the most heartfelt and melodious music that the often unwieldy Pfitzner ever wrote.
