Background: Friedrich Klose was a German neo-romantic composer admired for his original orchestration and instrumentation. Ilsebill, or "The Tale of the Fisherman and His Wife" is based on the well known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. The première of Ilsebill in 1903 was such a success that Klose was lauded by the German press as "the new man" of the German music theatre. The music Klose wrote for the opera is comparable to that of a symphony. The music has a dreamy character corresponding to the action and offers gripping and intense development passages. Although Klose tried to steer away from Wagnerian traditions, Wagner's influence still prevails on occasions. |
