Background: Today it does not look in the least absurd, but in the early 1970s it seemed strange to match a self-taught, somewhat unorthodox jazz violinist who came to prominence with the guitarist Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France with a classical prodigy hailed a genius even before he reached his teens.

With skilful arrangers such a Max Harris and Nelson Riddle and sympathetic fellow musicians the 'marriage' worked wonderfully, not least in the way each soloist inspired the other.
