Background: The choral works of Alexander von Zemlinsky are deeply romantic and full of rich orchestral colour. They take their place in the Austrian tradition that can be traced back through Bruckner and Schubert to Haydn, with his great oratorios and masses. Zemlinsky had an acute ear for harmony and instrumental timbre, and these gifts give his songs their great appeal; they are distinctly different from the courses set by Brahms on the one side and Wagner on the other. James Conlon, who has made a series of recordings of Zemlinsky’s music, is perhaps this composer’s most persuasive interpreter. |
