Background: This collection brings together four of Tchaikovsky's best-loved orchestral works. The most substantial is the ballet Nutcracker, composed in the penultimate year of his life. The Festival Overture 1812 was written to mark the consecration of a new cathedral replacing the one burnt during the fire that engulfed Moscow to prevent Napoleon and his troops taking the city; it is arguably the most popular work, and certainly the most familiar. The tragedies of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Dante’s Francesca da Rimini and Paolo are the subjects of the two remaining works. |
