Background: In the early 1950s Schwarzkopf also starred in a series of Lehár operetta recordings that were seen at the time as landmarks and helped establish the genre as worthy of attention by the finest operatic artists. With the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted with vitality and freshness by Otto Ackermann and the luxury casting of singers like Nicolai Gedda and Erich Kunz in the leading male roles, these recordings received unanimous praise. The Record Guide described Schwarzkopf in Die lustige Witwe as 'enchanting from end to end' and said that in Das Land des Lächelns it is her 'radiant loveliness of tone that enchants us first, but also the consummate, irresistible artistry'. |
