Background: Born in 1876 in Berlin, where he attended the Stern Conservatory, Bruno Walter decided to become a conductor in 1899 after hearing a concert conducted by Hans von Bülow. He served his apprenticeship in various German cities, including Hamburg under Gustav Mahler, who was a profound influence on Walter’s career and artistic development. In 1901, Walter was invited to work with Mahler in Vienna, where he stayed until his appointment in 1913 as music director in Munich. |
