Background: Without Pablo Casals the standing in the 20th century of the cello would probably have been negligible. The great Spanish musician virtually re-created the repertoire for his instrument and worked tirelessly to raise its profile in both recital and concert to that enjoyed by the violin and piano. But Casals was more than a pioneering instrumentalist: he was a conductor, teacher and composer and, perhaps above all, a great fighter against injustice. |

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: recorded 1936 1937 & 1945 - Penguin Guide 3 star 'Casals plays with astonishing fire and the performance seems to spring to life in a way that eludes many modern artists' |
