Background: Galina Vishnevskaya, one of the finest dramatic singers of her generation, was born in Leningrad and inherited her passion for music from her mother. Though her first singing teacher insisted that she was a mezzo-soprano, some years later (when she was already singing professionally with an operetta company) another teacher, Vera Garina, showed her that she was a true soprano. At the age of 25 she was accepted by the Bolshoi Opera Company and launched her brilliant international career. She and her husband Rostropovich established an abiding friendship with Shostakovich, who wrote a number of important works for her, including the song cycles and the Mussorgsky orchestration included on this CD. Her exceptional dramatic gifts are also heard in a scene from Shostakovich’s ill-fated opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. |
