Background: Universally celebrated as a supreme cellist, 'Slava' Rostropovich was born in Baku in Azerbaijan in 1927 and studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where at the age of 29 he was appointed professor of cello. Allowed to travel widely, Rostropovich's reputation spread throughout Europe and America. Shostakovich, his friend and mentor, wrote his First Concerto for him in 1959 and at the London premiere in 1960, Rostropovich met Britten, who would become a lifelong friend and the creator of five works inspired by the cellist's artistry and personality. Two of those works (the magnificent Cello Symphony of 1963 and the second of the three cello suites) plus Shostakovich’s concerto are featured on this CD in historically important recordings made in Moscow in the 1960s. |
