Background: As with Dinu Lipatti five years earlier, it was Alfred Cortot who first recognised the genius of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. He declared that 'A new Liszt is born!' when the young Italian was proclaimed winner of the Geneva International Piano Competition in 1939. Born in Brescia in 1920, Michelangeli’s training was exclusively Italian and as well as becoming a quite exceptional musician, he was also a doctor of medicine, a fully qualified pilot and a virtuoso driver of Ferraris. As a pianist he became a legend in his own lifetime. Though his playing could occasionally be chilly and detached, at its best, as in the 1953 recordings of the two Mozart concertos on this CD, it was unforgettable: musical and technical expertise perfectly combined. |
