Background: In his lifetime Yehudi Menuhin (1916–1999) achieved huge celebrity not only as a superb musician (both violinist and conductor), but also as a roving ambassador, educationist and philanthropist. A musical prodigy, he was brought up in San Francisco, where he had his first violin lessons. He made his New York debut in 1926 and subsequently made his first trip to Europe, where he studied with Enescu and Adolf Busch, both profound influences on his musical development. He was soon making records and as the early recordings on this CD demonstrate, Menuhin (in his late teens) was technically an astonishing player. However, it is the mature Menuhin who is heard in the major work here: his first recording of the Violin Concerto, made in 1949 with Wilhelm Furtwängler and an undoubted classic of the gramophone. |
