Background: Dinu Lipatti (1917-1950) was born in Bucharest, where he studied at the Conservatory. At the Vienna International Piano Competition in 1934, Alfred Cortot resigned from the jury when Lipatti was awarded only second prize. Lipatti subsequently moved to Paris to study not only with Cortot but also with Dukas and Nadia Boulanger. Though the first signs of leukaemia were diagnosed in 1943, Lipatti was able to continue teaching, composing and playing the piano. From 1946, when he signed a record contract, his supreme pianism could be more widely appreciated through the medium of the gramophone. His last recital, reissued on this CD, was given against all the odds and against his doctor's advice. It is a consummate musical experience; 'a testimony to Lipatti's transcendental powers, his almost frightening assertion of mind over matter'. |
