Background: Jacqueline du Pré took up the cello at an early age. Her London debut was in 1961 and in the next ten years her international career and some impressive recordings made her a star. Tragically, with the onset of multiple sclerosis, she was forced to retire in 1973. Amazingly, in so short a time she had mastered most of the great works in the cello repertoire, including famously the concerto by Elgar, and also those by Schumann and Dvorák, which are heard on this CD in the superb EMI recordings made with her husband Daniel Barenboim, the musician who meant most to her. |
