Background: Walter Gieseking despised piano practice, technical exercises and intellectual research. Rather he trusted to the 'dreamer’s intuition' and to his capacity to learn and memorise at lightning speed. His childhood, spent in France and Italy, had a profound influence on both his musical direction and his choice of repertoire, particularly Debussy and Ravel. However, in the hugely successful international career that followed his German debut in 1920 he drew on a vast repertoire. In the early 1950s, prior to his untimely death at the age of 61, Gieseking recorded the complete piano works of Mozart, Debussy and Ravel. And, as this CD demonstrates, his Debussy recordings remain unsurpassed. |
