Background: John Rutter wanted his setting of Gloria to be equally at home in church and concert hall and therefore wrote it as a concert work. The Magnificat was written as a festive piece and has something of a Spanish-Mexican flavour. Rutter also prepared a more intimate, reduced-scoring version, which is what is recorded here. Psalm 150 was written for St Paul's Cathedral on the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 and is firmly in the tradition of English ceremonial music. |
