Background: Andrew Lloyd Webber's sensational new musical The Woman in White was premiered in September 2004 at the Palace Theatre in London. The work is adapted for the stage by Charlotte Jones from Wilkie Collins's sensational Victorian thriller; the lyrics are by David Zippel. The Woman in White brings to the stage a plot of terrifying brilliance. A handsome young man is stranded at a remote railway cutting. Out of the darkness looms a woman, a mysterious figure dressed in white, who burns to tell a chilling secret. Two sisters find themselves snared in a web of betrayal and greed, the victims of a flawless crime. Unprotected in a man's world, they will need all their resourcefulness and courage to outwit a villain of overpowering charisma and ingenuity. But they can also rely on the guiding hand of love. Michael Crawford makes a welcome return to the West End stage some 18 years after he starred in The Phantom of the Opera. He plays the charismatic Italian Count Fosco, one of the wittiest and cleverest villains ever written, and stars alongside multi-award winning actress Maria Friedman as the courageous heroine Marian. |
