Background: Sabine Meyer continues to explore the highways and byways of the clarinet repertoire with this fascinating disc of orchestral versions of chamber works by three German romanctic composers of the early 19th century. Felix Mendelssohn wrote two concert pieces for clarinet, basset horn and piano in 1832. Carl Maria von Weber composed the Clarinet Quintet in 1815. On this disc these three works are heard in the composer's own versions with orchestral accompaniment. Heinrich Baermann is a lesser known figure from this period, but his Clarinet Quartet is an engaging piece, and again it is a version for clarinet and strings that is heard on this disc. |
