Background: Offenbach's La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein was premiered at the Théâtre des Variétés on 12 April 1867 and met with phenomenal success. Nonetheless, adjustments had to be made to satisfy public taste and the censor; this recording goes back to the original version.

This studio recording re-unites Mark Minkowski and Felicity Lott for the first time since the very successful recording of La Belle Hélène in 2001.
