Background: This recording features American mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe in masterpieces of the Romantic and post-Romantic period. There are not many recordings of these works, and it has been some time since a mezzo has successfully sought to challenge the celebrated recordings of such legends as Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig. The Wesendonck-Lieder are here recorded in the arrangement for chamber orchestra by Henze (1976). The same goes for Mahler's ‘Der Abschied': Schönberg left unfinished an arrangement for alto and chamber orchestra, which Rainer Riehn completed in 1983. |
