Background: This disc features the world premiere recording of Berlioz's Nuits d’eté sung by a countertenor. The decision to record this work was David Daniels's own, and comes from his desire to stretch the boundaries of the countertenor repertoire. Daniels has performed the Nuits d’été in concert several times over the past few years, always to enthusiastic praise. The New York Times said of his recent recital: 'Les Nuits d’été was a smart choice. The five numbers are normally sung by a mezzo-soprano, so by a voice of roughly countertenor range. But the composer first drafted them for various singers - one for a baritone, others for a tenor - thus changes of voice are written into the work's performance history. The cycle was not, therefore, being violated. His sound was sweet and beguiling, having something of a mezzo's richness, but finer, quicker, hotter… he was full of life and delicacy.' |
