Background: Between 1706 and 1710 the young Handel lived in Italy so as to study the masters and perfect his musical education. These Italian years were a period of intense creativity in Florence, Rome and Naples. It is in Naples in 1708 that he created the pastoral serenata Aci, Galatea & Polifemo. Handel re-worked the subject in 1718 as a 'masque' in English, Acis & Galatea, of which the music is completely different. It is the original Italian version that Virgin Classics has recorded: it was written for 3 voices which correspond to the three characters: Acis the shepherd (soprano), Galatea the nymph (alto) and Polifemo the giant (bass). The music is virtuosic, scintillating and full of exuberance, whilst still featuring the while dramatic arias of love, despair and bereavement. |
