Background: On April 29th in 1969, Duke Ellington’s 70th Birthday was celebrated at The White House. He was not only awarded the Medal Of Freedom by President Nixon, but he was also the guest of honour at a gala dinner featuring performances by an all star cast of jazz musicians. 28 tracks in total, these recordings are previously unissued and feature live performances from 16 of the jazz greats including Dave Brubeck, Billy Taylor, Gerry Mulligan, JJ Johnson and Jim Hall. All tracks are taken from the Ellington/Strayhorn songbook aside from one – a three minute piano piece by Duke entitled 'Pat' which he dedicated to the President’s wife. CATALOGUE NR: 5352492 |
