Background: The great German mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig was 80 years old on 16 March 2008. EMI Classics are pleased to be able to present this 5-CD set of some of her finest recordings, made during the 1950s and '60s, when she was at the height of her powers as the leading German mezzo. Ludwig's range of repertoire was versatile, from Bach through Mozart to Brahms, Mahler and Strauss. She was equally at home in German Lieder, French mélodie and the great operatic roles. This set starts with a strong selection of Lieder by Brahms, Schumann, Schubert, Mahler, Reger, Wolf and Strauss, continues with a programme of French, Russian and Italian songs and ends with a representative choice from some of her greatest operatic recordings, not least of which is the incomparable act three conclusion to Strauss's Rosenkavalier with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Teresa Stich-Randall. |
