Background: Words cannot do justice when attempting to describe the art of Nathan Milstein, the magnificent Russian violinist. Elegant, intense, sensitive. All the things of which a violinist dreams, this illustrious master of the bow had them all. During his stay (like many other artists) on the shores of Lake Geneva after the war he made a number of recordings for Radio Suisse Romande. These luminous treasures, truly transcendent moments, are filled with the emotional power and presence characteristic of live recordings. On 11 September 1955 he raised his bow to perform Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole with André Cluytens and the Paris National Orchestra (and like many of his colleagues at the time he omitted the central Intermezzo, a practice in question today). Five years later, again at Montreux's Septembre musical Festival, he performed Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Major with Paul Klecki and the NDR Symphonic Orchestra. |
