Background: Franz Adolf Berwald, who came from a family of musicians of German origin, was born in Stockholm on 23 July 1796 and died there on 3 April 1868. He was generally ignored during his lifetime and had to make his living as an orthopaedic surgeon and, later, as the manager of a sawmill and glass works. He is now considered the finest Swedish composer of the 19th century, indeed probably the finest Swedish composer of any century. This comprehensive collection of his symphonies and concertos also includes a selection of his better-known shorter orchestral pieces and represents an excellent introduction to the works of this much underrated master. Anyone familiar with the works of Mendelssohn or Berlioz will find instant appeal here. |
