Background: Such was the effect of the failure of his First Symphony that the 22-year-old Rachmaninov composed nothing for another three years. The first performance in St Petersburg in 1897 was a complete disaster: rumour has it that the conductor, Glazunov, was drunk. It was only after receiving a course of psychoanalysis that his confidence was restored to the extent that he could compose again. His return to composition brought about his celebrated Second Piano Concerto. At the other end of Rachmaninov's career and life, in 1940, came the Symphonic Dances. By this time the composer had been living in the USA and had just completed a series of recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Eugene Ormandy of his works for piano and orchestra. It was these forces to whom Rachmaninov dedicated the new work and who gave the première on 3 January, 1941. The Symphonic Dances were to be Rachmaninov's last major work: he died on March 28, 1943, just four days before his 70th birthday. Mariss Jansons and the St Petersburg orchestra give totally committed and idiomatic performances of these wonderful works. Every lover of the music of Rachmaninov should possess these recordings, no matter how many other performances they might have in their collection. |
