Background: The six symphonies are the high point of Nielsen's (1865-1931) production and clearly show his development from early youth to old age. His first symphony (1890-92) already showed maturity and personality. He named his second symphony 'The Four Temperaments', his third 'Sinfonia espansiva', the Fourth 'The inextinguishable' and the Sixth 'Sinfonia semplice' (1924-25). Herbert Blomstedt, an American-born orchestral conductor, was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. His Swedish parents moved the family back to their country of origin two years after Blomstedts birth. He studied at the Stockholm Royal College of Music and the University of Uppsala, followed by studies of contemporary music at Darmstadt in 1949. The Danish National Symphony Orchestra is Denmark's most renowned symphony orchestra. It is among the world's oldest radio symphony orchestras, being founded in 1925. Two noted musicians, conductors Fritz Busch and the Russian Nikolai Malko, laid the foundations for the orchestra's musical tradition. |
