Background: Following the success of Rostropovich: Early Recordings (4776505) in 2007, here is another Original Masters Twofer featuring the great Russian cellist who died in April 2007. This release features Rostropovich as a great team-player, not just as the great virtuoso. Here he is, with regular partners Leonid Kogan and Emil Gilels, in five piano trios - by Haydn, Beethoven and Schumann - plus Fauré's First Piano Quartet, where the young Rudolf Barshai joins the ensemble. These are highly polished performances, newly remastered in Hanover from tape sources - unlike the recent releases of the same material on other labels who used old LP copies for their transfers. |
