Background: Anna Netrebko has made it her mission to bring opera to a wider public. For 'Russian Album', she takes listeners to St Petersburg as she teams up with Valery Gergiev, the conductor who championed her when she first arrived from a small town in southern Russia. The collection includes Netrebko in a signature role, Natasha from War and Peace. In addition she gives listeners a taste of roles yet to come with Tatiana's letter scene from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. The album also celebrates the fairytale tunes from Rachmaninov, music by Glinka, and the 'Swan Princess Aria' from Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tale of Tsar Sultan - the opera with the familiar 'Flight of the Bumblebee', another selection on the album, as well as two well-known Rachmaninov songs, here in versions with orchestra. |
