Background: Albéniz's neglected operatic masterpiece. Pepita Jiménez is a lyric comic opera that was set to an English text and written in 1904. Conductor José de Eusebio has based his edition on the original manuscript and printed sources in order to present us with a performance that Albéniz would have endorsed. Whatever the merits of the two 1896 versions (the unpublished one-act manuscript and the two-act edition published that same year) may have been, clearly the 1904 revision represented Albéniz's final thoughts on the matter and the summit of his achievement as an opera composer, and it is this version de Eusebio brings back to life. |
