Background: Shostakovich's 4th symphony appears with the fragment of the unpublished movement for the first time on CD. With his new symphony, the 30-year-old Shostakovich had composed a 'volcanic eruption'. Composed two generations after Stravinsky's 'Le sacre du printemps' and Prokofiev's 'Scythian Suite', this symphony took Shostakovich and Russian music in a radically new direction. The timing of the artistic revolution, however, was very badly chosen. At the time, Shostakovich quite literally composed for his living. and the fourth symphony could have been his death. at the same time as he was fine-tuning his new symphony, the first public condemnation of the hitherto successful composer was promulgated by the totalitarian Stalinist system, which in the mid 1930's was supported with enormous publicity and internally executed with fearful criminal methods. |
