Background: Solomon's selfless concern for the composer produced a pianism that was 'unadorned yet transcendental' and never more so than in Beethoven, whose music was at the very heart of his repertoire. He recorded 18 of the composer's 32 sonatas before his enforced retirement, and it is these performances, particularly of the last sonatas, that form the most fitting testament to Solomon's artistry. He was among the greatest interpreters of the 'Hammerklavier' Sonata and it is his classic recording of this mighty work coupled with his equally fine reading of the very last sonata that are featured on this CD tribute. |
