Background: Milstein, who knew Prokofiev, gave the Moscow premiere of the First Concerto ('a work of genius') in 1923 and recorded it twice. He made only one recording of the Second Concerto (1935), which he described as an excellent work, though perhaps less inspired than the first. From their 1955 recording of the Second Sonata (fashioned in 1944 by David Oistrakh and the composer from the Flute Sonata) it is clear that Milstein and his regular duo-partner Artur Balsam relished the work's 'bright and transparent Classical tones'. |
