Background: To reflect the scale of Karajan's achievements, the Great Artists series already includes a seminal recording from early in the conductor's career (Brahms in Vienna in 1946). This second release features another important Karajan recording (a superb Ravel recital from Paris in 1971) and a coupling (a stunning Boléro from 1977) that acts as a taster of Karajan's 45-year association with the orchestra he made his own, the Berlin Philharmonic. |

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: recorded 1971 & 1977 - Bolero - Penguin Guide 4 star 'these are superb performances and this is a worthy disc to represent Karajan as one of EMI's "Great Artists of the Century". The Orchestre de Paris responds splendidly to the conductor's sensuous approach to these scores, and only the saxophone-like quality of the French horns gives cause for doubt' |
