Background: Hungarian Heinrich Berte got some bad press for his musical 'Das Dreimälderhaus' (translated into French as 'Chanson d'Amour'!), but it has survived better than any of his original ballets or operettas, entirely because most of the music is actually by Schubert! The storyline includes the Viennese composer, which provides an excuse for Berte's unashamed plagiarism - but the main justification for the whole exercise is that it makes a delightful piece of musical theatre, beautifully realised in this unique 1962 recording, with a superb French cast conducted by the admirable Jésus Etcheverry. |
