Background: The rediscovery of a lost musical world of arias from the 'Forbidden Operas' of Handel, Scarlatti and Caldara. Opera proibita is, without question, Cecilia Bartoli's most exciting project to date with amazing performances of great music from Handel, Scarlatti and Caldara. When the young Handel arrived in the Holy City of Rome in the early years of the 18th Century he was one of many outstanding musicians who made their home there, including Alessandro Scarlatti and Antonio Caldara. On this album, Cecilia Bartoli uncovers the glories of oratorios written in Rome at a time when opera performance was forbidden by the Church. Although many of these arias are written for female characters, public performances by female singers were also forbidden, so the roles were often sung by male castrati. |
