Background: Christopher Hogwood and The Academy of Ancient Music have made a number of distinguished recordings of Handel. Handel's most popular oratorio, Messiah heads up this set in which the 1985 recording of Athalia (with none less than Joan Sutherland in the title-role) returns to the international catalogue after an absence of several years. Esther, the first English oratorio and the first oratorio by Handel to make major use of the chorus, was recorded in 1984, and has Patrizia Kwella in the title-role. La Resurrezione stands apart from Handel's English oratorios of his mature years and represents his first oratorio on a sacred subject; it was written in 1708 for Rome and is a richly dramatic work which the composer produced under the patronage of the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. |
