Background: Frederick Fennell's swashbuckling performances of Sousa marches, originally on two separate LPs entitled 'Sound Off' and 'Sousa on Review', have long been amongst the most celebrated of the many recordings of American repertoire on the Mercury Living Presence label. Totalling 24 marches, those included here span almost the entire career of the so-called 'March King', John Philip Sousa. Performed by the celebrated Eastman Wind Ensemble, the band's size and personnel follows closely that of Sousa's own Marine Band, comprising 52 players: 25 reeds, 19 brass, 6 percussion, harp and double bass. |
