Background: These recordings of four of Britten's operas conducted by the composer are all classics of the gramophone. There have been a few other recordings in recent years of Peter Grimes, Billy Budd & Albert Herring but none has matched what the composer himself had to offer by way of interpretative insights to these works. Owen Wingrave remains unique as an audio recording and this reissue restores it to the catalogue. In addition, these recordings feature many of the singers who were involved in the creation of these operas - not least Peter Pears in the title-role of the earliest of the operas featured, Peter Grimes. This was the first complete recording of what was quickly acknowledged as a landmark work of international stature. It was recorded in December 1958 and has been part of the Decca catalogue ever since. |
