Background: The American baritone Robert Merrill was born in Brooklyn, New York, on 4 June 1917 and had his early training from his mother. The majority of his career centred around his appearances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he made his debut in La Traviata in 1945; his Covent Garden debut took place some twenty years later, in 1967. By 1973, Merrill had celebrated 500 operatic appearances. As late as 1975 Merrill made his London concert debut but it was twelve years before that he made this mainly-Verdi recital, recorded in London under the direction of one of the finest Verdi interpreters of the past 50 years, Edward Downes. |
